Costa Concordia: the dramatic communication between the ship’s Captain and the Coast Guard

‘Commander, what are you doing…would you like to go home? This is an order….Come back on board immediately !’
These are just some of the sarcastic sentences pronounced by the officers of the Italian Port Authorities in the first radio contact with the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, after the Costa Concordia shipwreck.
Schettino received the first radio call from the Italian Port Authorities around the 00:32 am, Saturday morning. At that time, according to some witnesses, the commander had already left the ship. They are asking him about how many people are still on the cruise ship but Schettino did not know the answer. “Now I go back on deck – lies Schettino that already is on the shore – I’m going there to see what’s happening“. Port authorities: ”You have to be the last to leave the ship…do you know it!?” “I’ll be the last” replies, deliberately lying, the Captain.
In the second radio call – at 0:42 am – Port Authorities asked him again how many people still have to be rescued. Schettino: “I called the Cruise Company and they told me that there are 2-300 hundred people still waiting” “I’m coordinating” says Schettino. But soon after he says “We can not come back on board because the ship is moving“ And then: “We abandoned ship.”
At this point the Coast Guard has good reasons to suspect Schettino has left the ship “Commander, did you left the ship?”. Schettino quickly denies: “No, no…i’m still on board..” Coast Guard officer now raises his voice and tries to shake the captain.”Now you go forward and you come back on board through the pilot ladder to coordinate the evacuation. We need to know exactly how many people still have to be rescued, if there are children, women and the exact number of passengers still on board. Go now! What are you doing…do you leave the passengers alone? “. Schettino: “No, no, I’m here, I’m coordinating the evacuation.” The officer again, “Captain, this is an order, now I am the commander in chief. You said you abandoned ship, now you have to come back on board and coordinate the evacuation. There are already dead bodies on the shore.. “ Schettino: “How many?”. Officer: “YOU must tell me this ! Do you want to go home? Schettino: “Okay, I’m going back on board.”

Francesco Schettino is now in jail. He may face 15 years for manslaughter, shipwreck and abandonment of ship.
