CRUISE SHIP RUNS AGROUND ITALY
LAST UPDATE : THE REAL CAUSES OF THE SHIPWRECK
Three dead and 14 wounded, two in serious condition; this is the first official report of the italian cruis ship disaster occurred Friday night. Costa Concordia, this is the name of the italian cruise ship, ran aground on a sandbank in front of the Giglio island in the Tuscan Archipelago.
On board the Concordia there were 4,229 tourists. Italian officers report that the missing could be many: 70 people in fact have not yet responded to the call-board. The cruise company Costa Crociere announced the nationality and the exact number of passengers on board the cruise ship: 989 are Italian, 569 are from Germany, 462 are French, 177 from Spain, 129 from Croatia 127 Americans and 56 from other nationalities. It is necessary to add the 1,013 crew members, for a total of 4,229 people. The rescuers on the boat, now lying on its right side, are inspecting the ship’s cabins looking for survivors who may be still inside the Concordia cruise ship.
The interrogation of Franco Schettino, Concordia’s captain, is in progress. The captain is reporting to the italian officers what is happened in the minutes in which the disaster occurred and he’s explaining why the cruise ship was so much closer to the Giglio island. As planned, the Concordia would have to cross the channel between the Argentario and the Giglio island, at least 5 miles off the Italian coast.
The three victims, according to the first forensic investigations, died by drowning: the bodies are now at the Orbetello Hospital Morgue.
